Nutrition Coaching

Has the following ever happened to you before?  You start a new diet and lose a few pounds, get stuck, lose your motivation, and quit?  You step up your diet and exercise routine and lose a significant amount of weight, only to gain it all back (and perhaps even more) over the next 1-2 years?  Or maybe you always find yourself thinking about losing weight and changing your body but for some reason you just can’t seem to take action?

If this sounds familiar, don’t worry – you’re normal.  Listen there is no shortage of nutrition-related information out there – some of it good, some of it poor.  Either way, there is usually a missing ingredient that often goes overlooked – the process of actually changing your behavior.  It probably goes without saying, but change is HARD!  And besides being hard, we never really learn how to change our behaviors which is ultimately the key to sustained success.

Contrary to what you are led to believe, improving your nutrition requires much more than lists of what to eat and what to avoid and providing a sample meal plan.  New skills often need to be acquired and new habits need to be formed.  Attention needs to be paid to your values, life priorities, and goals.  Getting clarification as to how these relate to each other also must be given careful consideration.  And often times, some mental and emotional baggage needs to be unpacked and sorted out before real and lasting change can finally begin to take place.

Experience has taught us that people can only consistently achieve their health and wellness goals when they do two things:

  • Break the thing they want to do (i.e., their goal) into specific skills.
  • Build those skills through strategic daily habits (i.e., practices).

Here’s the formula:

Practice daily to build skills.  Build skills to achieve goals.

Is more information the answer?

Health and nutrition information is everywhere these days.  This is kind of ironic because we often find clients do better with less information rather than more.  If reading the last bestselling diet book didn’t work the first dozen times, it probably won’t work the next time either.  We always seem to get the WHAT to do, but never the HOW to do it.  Information alone will rarely get you to your goals.  Until it gets combined with action, you tend to stay where you are.

What is our nutritional philosophy?

We don’t really have one.  Everyone is different so the one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t really apply.  However, we do believe a healthy diet generally consists of:

  • whole, minimally processed foods;
  • lots of plants;
  • enough protein to meet your needs;
  • a healthy mix of fats;
  • carbohydrates based on activity level; and
  • plenty of water.

What you can expect from your nutrition coaching experience:

  • Whatever your goals are, whether it’s to lose weight, look and feel better, or have more energy, we’ll help you get there.
  • Taking your lifestyle, needs, preferences, and goals into account, we’ll help you develop a plan to eat, move, and live better.
  • We’ll be your “information filter” to help you sort out what you need to know, when you need to know it.
  • You’ll learn to develop healthy habits that become second nature, lead you to your goals, and last a lifetime.
  • We’ll provide you with accountability, direction, and support, as well as help you stay consistent no matter what twists and turns life has in store for you.
  • We won’t be just another person telling you what you want to hear.
  • Once you achieve whatever it is you’re after, you’ll learn to stay that way for good!
